Root Canal Therapy in Westfield, Indiana

A root canal is an extensive restorative dental treatment to save a natural tooth after serious decay has affected the tooth pulp. The pulp of a tooth is the center portion of the tooth that houses all of the nerves, collective tissues, and blood vessels. At Springmill Family Dental, we do all that we can to help our patients prevent serious dental issues. But when they do occur, we have the skills and equipment to help.

There are many reasons why a patient might need a root canal, including

  • Severe tooth infection
  • Cracked or chipped tooth
  • Damage to the tooth’s structure through injury
  • Widespread decay that has infected a large portion of the tooth

It is impossible to know for sure if you require a root canal without a professional diagnosis, however, below are some signs and symptoms you can look out for:

  • Discoloration of the tooth enamel
  • Abscessed tooth or gum tissue
  • Swollen, bleeding, or red gums
  • Intense pain while biting down
  • Your crown has fallen off and you’re experiencing pain and discomfort

We urge our patients to always pay close attention to their teeth to recognize symptoms and address any problems as quickly as possible.

Therapy

The root canal procedure consists of removing all the decay and the entire pulp of the tooth to save the natural tooth. This procedure is extensive and performed very carefully due to the sensitive pulp running down through the roots.

We use special long instruments to go into the pulp and carefully remove all the tissues, only leaving the enamel behind. Once there is no trace of infection or pulp tissue, the inside of the tooth will be cleaned and disinfected to ensure no other problems will occur. Once the tooth is clean, the inner tooth will be filled with composite resin to keep the tooth dense and strong enough to withstand chewing and speaking.

Finally, the new tooth filling will be cleaned, polished, and reshaped to your tooth’s original anatomy.

By the end of this process, your tooth and surrounding areas will be sore and tender, but there will be no sign of infection or sign of the procedure in your smile. Your teeth will look beautiful and natural in just one visit.
